Real Oviedo are accelerating efforts to safeguard the future of Ghanaian midfielder Kwasi Sibo, whose impressive rise has made him one of the club’s most valuable assets. The 26-year-old was instrumental in Oviedo’s surge to La Liga promotion last season, a breakout campaign that has drawn admiring glances from clubs across Spain and beyond.

Sibo’s current deal runs until June 2026, but Oviedo are pushing for an additional year to keep the midfielder tied down for the long term. The club’s hierarchy views the extension as a strategic shield against growing transfer interest, especially with his influence on the pitch increasing by the week.

Although the contract contains an automatic renewal clause triggered once Sibo hits 25 matches this season, Oviedo are reluctant to gamble on that mechanism. The midfielder has only five appearances so far, and club insiders fear that waiting could allow rival clubs to enter the race.

Talks, however, have not gone smoothly. Sources close to the player say his camp is holding firm, insisting on a significant improvement to his financial package before committing to any new agreement. They argue that Sibo’s stock has climbed sharply, boosted further by his Ghana national team debut against Mali, and that his salary should reflect his elevated status.

The looming 2026 World Cup adds another layer of urgency. Oviedo are wary of the possibility that a strong tournament could propel Sibo’s value far beyond their reach, or make him a target for bigger clubs.

For now, negotiations remain ongoing, but the Asturian club are determined to avoid losing one of their cornerstone players just as they return to Spain’s top flight.
