Ghanaian-born winger Francis Amuzu has set the record straight regarding his decision to switch allegiance from Belgium to Ghana, insisting that his choice has nothing to do with the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Currently plying his trade with Brazilian side Grêmio, Amuzu emphasized in an interview with a local outlet that his heart has always been with Ghana. His reaffirmation comes shortly after the Black Stars secured their fifth qualification for the global showpiece, fueling speculation that his timing was influenced by the tournament.

Amuzu, who once turned down a national team invitation in 2022, was quick to dismiss that perception, stressing that his decision stems from pride in his heritage rather than a desire for international exposure.

“I was born in Ghana, so I’m happy they qualified for the World Cup. It’s a wonderful tournament to play in,” he explained.

The winger’s declaration has sparked mixed responses from fans and analysts alike, some applauding his patriotism, while others view the timing as conveniently aligned with Ghana’s return to the biggest stage in football.

But in a separate conversation with Asempa FM, the former Anderlecht star doubled down on his intentions, asserting that his commitment to Ghana is unwavering, whether or not it comes with a World Cup appearance.

“If it’s for the World Cup, it will be nice,” Amuzu said. “If it’s after the World Cup, it’s also nice, I will be happy. It is a dream for me to play for the national team of Ghana. “I know also that I have to perform well to get a call-up. If it [call-up] comes, good. If it doesn’t come, I have to work harder.”

Born in Accra but raised in Belgium, the 25-year-old previously represented the European nation at youth level, featuring for their U-19 and U-21 sides. Now, with his international future firmly aligned with Ghana, Amuzu says he’s ready to earn his place the hard way, through consistent performances on the pitch.
