Ghanaian forward Nathaniel Opoku made an immediate impact, scoring inside the opening ten minutes to help Newport County secure a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Harrogate Town at Rodney Parade.

The hosts wasted little time asserting themselves, with Opoku reacting quickest in the box to meet a low delivery from Ben Lloyd. The striker’s instinctive first-time finish in the 8th minute left goalkeeper Henry Gray with no chance and handed Newport an early advantage.

Harrogate gradually grew into the contest and found their equalizer just before halftime. Jack Evans restored parity in the 39th minute, calmly striking from the edge of the area after a well-worked move initiated by Jacob Slater on the left flank.

After the interval, Newport regrouped and began to dictate proceedings more effectively. Their persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Joe Thomas ghosted in at the far post to convert a dangerous cross from James Crole, restoring the home side’s lead.

From that point on, the team managed by Christian Fuchs showed composure and discipline, keeping Harrogate largely at bay despite the visitors seeing more of the ball. Clear-cut chances were scarce as Newport focused on protecting their slender lead.

Opoku’s contribution adds to a steady campaign for the striker, who now boasts six goals and two assists from 29 League Two outings this season.

Newport will now shift their focus to a challenging away fixture against Cheltenham Town on April 18, aiming to carry this momentum into another crucial encounter.
