Kwame Opoku‘s second stint with Asante Kotoko appears to be drawing to an abrupt end after reports emerged that the striker has been told to find a new club before the start of the 2026/27 season.

According to an exclusive report from Kumasi-based Opemsuo Radio, the club’s technical leadership has decided to move on from the 27-year-old forward as part of a wider rebuilding exercise under new head coach Eric Tinkler.

The report states that Director of Football Stanley Menzo and Tinkler have informed Opoku that he does not feature in their plans, urging him to seek opportunities elsewhere as they reshape the squad for the upcoming campaign. They reportedly explained that they cannot guarantee him a place in the team they are assembling for the new season.

The development marks a disappointing turn for the striker, who only rejoined the Porcupine Warriors less than a year ago after leaving Moroccan outfit Olympique Khouribga. He signed a two-and-a-half-year contract amid expectations that he would rediscover the form that once made him one of the Ghana Premier League’s most feared attackers.

However, persistent injury setbacks limited his influence throughout the 2025/26 campaign. Despite those challenges, Opoku still found the net four times in 16 appearances, though it was evidently not enough to convince the club’s new hierarchy to retain him.

His first spell in Kumasi remains the benchmark of his career. During the 2020/21 season, Opoku produced an outstanding run of form, registering six goals and three assists in just 16 matches to propel Kotoko’s attack.

Those displays earned him a high-profile transfer to Algerian powerhouse USM Alger, before he later continued his career in Morocco with Olympique Khouribga.

With Kotoko pressing ahead with a fresh project under Tinkler, Opoku must now turn his attention to securing a new club where he can reignite his career and return to the levels that once made him one of the most sought-after forwards in Ghanaian football.
