Como’s exciting young winger Jayden Addai says he finds himself at a crossroads as he contemplates whether to commit his international future to the Netherlands or embrace his Ghanaian heritage by representing the Black Stars.

The 20-year-old, who made the switch from AZ Alkmaar to Serie A newcomers Como last summer, has quickly made an impression in Italy with his lively performances and technical flair. His form has not gone unnoticed, both the Ghana Football Association and the Royal Dutch FA are reportedly keeping a close eye on him.

Born and raised in the Netherlands to Ghanaian parents, Addai has featured for the Dutch youth national teams but remains eligible to play for Ghana at senior level. With the 2026 FIFA World Cup looming, the decision is becoming increasingly significant.

“I’m proud and happy to be here,” Addai told VI PRO after being called up to the Netherlands U21 side. “I didn’t play many international matches in the youth teams because of my passport. I only had a Ghanaian passport, but for a few years now I’ve had both, so I can play for both countries.”

Though the talented winger remains diplomatic about his next move, he admits that his emotional ties to Ghana make the decision far from simple:

“I have the option to choose. My agent knows more about that, but I have a choice between the Netherlands and Ghana. I still have to see how it all goes. There’s also the World Cup coming up, which is a great tournament. Certainly, Ghana is truly in my heart. Both my parents are Ghanaian. I grew up Ghanaian, in the Netherlands. So that makes it difficult.”

Addai’s latest inclusion in the Dutch U21 squad for their fixtures against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Lithuania highlights his growing reputation. Yet even as his star rises in Europe, questions linger about which national jersey he will ultimately wear.

Dutch U21 coach John Reiziger, who has been impressed by Addai’s progression, hinted that the youngster could one day make the step-up to the senior national team, though he urged patience.

“Good wingers are interesting for us, but perhaps also for the Dutch national team in the long run,” Reiziger explained. “Of course, I discuss that with Ronald; young players who might have a future with the Dutch national team. There are several of them.”
