Ghanaian defender Sayibu Yakubu has embarked on the next chapter of his burgeoning European career after completing a permanent transfer to Czech First League outfit MFK Karvina from Finnish club SJK Seinajoki.
The highly-rated 20-year-old centre-back has signed a long-term contract with the Czech side after successfully undergoing his medical and completing all the necessary paperwork.
Yakubu arrived in the Czech Republic late last week and wasted little time settling into his new surroundings, immediately joining his teammates for pre-season preparations.
The towering defender has already offered an encouraging glimpse of his qualities, catching the eye in training before delivering a composed display in a friendly against Polish club Ruch Chorzow. His commanding presence in the air, assured distribution, and ability to create a dangerous scoring opportunity underscored why Karvina moved decisively to secure his services.
Karvina sporting director Lubomir Vlk believes the Ghanaian possesses the attributes the club had been searching for and is confident the youngster will flourish with time.
“We were looking for a defender who would fit into our playing philosophy. Sayibu showed himself in a good light against Ruch Chorzow. He is still a young player, and we have to work with him. I believe he will acclimatize quickly and become a quality reinforcement for the team. I welcome him to the club and wish him good health and success.”
Yakubu leaves Finland after a productive spell with SJK Seinajoki, whom he joined in the spring of 2024. His steady development and mature performances attracted interest beyond the Nordic nation, paving the way for his latest move.
The defender admitted the transfer materialised so quickly that he barely had the chance to say farewell before beginning his new adventure.
“I am very happy to have joined my new team and I have really enjoyed my first training sessions and matches. The last few days have been hectic because I had to leave in a hurry, and I didn’t even have time to say goodbye to everyone in Finland. I am here to help Karvina win and I am looking forward to making new friends.”
The move represents another important milestone for one of Ghana’s promising defensive talents, with Yakubu now set to test himself in the Czech top flight as he continues his progression in European football.
Karvina will be hoping the young centre-back’s blend of physicality, composure, and defensive intelligence adds greater solidity to their backline as they prepare for the upcoming Czech First League campaign.
