England’s search for a first-ever victory over Ghana will continue after the Black Stars produced another resilient performance to earn a 0-0 draw in their FIFA World Cup Group L encounter on Tuesday.

On a tense evening in Foxborough, Massachusetts, Ghana once again proved to be England’s nemesis, frustrating the Three Lions with a disciplined and organised display that secured a crucial point in the race for a place in the knockout stages.

The result not only strengthened Ghana’s qualification hopes but also preserved one of the most intriguing records in international football. Despite their rich history and success on the global stage, England remain unable to defeat Ghana.

The latest stalemate means the two nations have now met twice, with both contests ending level.

Their rivalry began in March 2011 when Ghana travelled to Wembley for a high-profile international friendly. England appeared on course for victory before Asamoah Gyan struck deep into stoppage time to snatch a dramatic 1-1 draw and silence the home crowd.

Fifteen years later, on football’s grandest stage, history repeated itself.

England controlled long spells of possession and attempted to impose themselves on the contest, but Carlos Queiroz’s side stood firm. The Black Stars defended with discipline, denied space in dangerous areas and repeatedly disrupted England’s rhythm.

As the pressure intensified in the closing stages, Ghana found a hero in goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.

The shot-stopper delivered a magnificent late save to keep out Harry Kane when a goal seemed inevitable. Moments later, England came even closer when Nico O’Reilly rattled the crossbar, but fortune favoured the Black Stars as they successfully protected their clean sheet.

By the final whistle, Ghana had secured more than just a point. They had once again denied England and further enhanced a remarkable record that has survived across generations.

The draw leaves England with an unwanted distinction. Ghana are one of only five nations the Three Lions have faced without ever recording a victory against.

Saudi Arabia have also avoided defeat in two meetings with England, while Algeria, Honduras and South Korea remain unbeaten after drawing their only encounters with the European side.

For Ghana, however, this achievement carries extra significance. Unlike the others, the Black Stars have now frustrated England both at Wembley and at the FIFA World Cup, underlining their ability to rise to the occasion against elite opposition.

With four points collected from their opening two Group L matches following the victory over Panama and the draw against England, Ghana now head into their final group fixture against Croatia knowing that another positive result could be enough to secure passage into the last 16.

England may have arrived in Foxborough seeking three points, but they departed with the same unanswered question that has lingered for 15 years.
