Gillingham have dipped into the League Two market and emerged with a statement signing, prising London-born Ghanaian midfielder Cameron Antwi away from Newport County on a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old switches allegiances within the division this January, arriving at Priestfield Stadium after an impressive first half of the campaign with the Exiles. Antwi had been a mainstay for Newport, chalking up 28 appearances across all competitions this season and establishing himself as one of their most reliable midfield operators.

Now, the former Fulham academy product takes the next step in his EFL journey, becoming Gillingham’s first recruit of the winter window as the Kent-based outfit look to inject quality and intent into their squad for the run-in.

Confirming the capture, Gillingham detailed Antwi’s journey through the English game, highlighting a career built on patience, graft and steady progression.

“The club is delighted to announce the signing of Cameron Antwi on a two-and-a-half year deal for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old joins Gillingham from Newport County and becomes our first new signing of the January transfer window. Antwi, a creative midfielder, began his career in the youth ranks at Fulham before signing for Blackpool in 2019. He signed pro terms a year later and made his professional debut in November 2020 in an EFL Trophy tie at home to Leeds United.

Loan spells at AFC Telford and Southport followed before Cameron agreed a one-year deal at Cardiff which was extended 12 months later until the summer of 2024. On leaving Cardiff, Cameron signed for Newport and, in total made 71 appearances over an 18-month spell. He netted six goals in all competitions, one of those against the Gills last weekend at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.”

That last detail will not be lost on Gillingham supporters. Antwi only recently haunted his new employers, finding the net against them in Newport colours, a reminder of the attacking threat and late runs from midfield he now brings to the Gills’ engine room.

Speaking after putting pen to paper, Antwi made no attempt to hide his excitement at the new challenge, citing ambition and belief as key factors behind his decision:

“I am delighted, I’ve had a look around the stadium – I get a good vibe from everyone at the club and I can’t wait to get started. When I spoke to the manager I felt an ambition and there was a target for this club. That was the big drive for me. I could feel the energy as soon as I met him and Dobbo.”

A technically gifted midfielder comfortable in possession, Antwi adds composure, creativity and EFL know-how to a Gillingham side keen to kick on in the second half of the season. His versatility across the middle of the park also gives the coaching staff valuable tactical flexibility.

The transfer remains subject to EFL ratification and international clearance, with a full interview with the player set to be released by the club in due course.

Born in London but of Ghanaian descent, Antwi remains eligible to represent the Black Stars at international level, an option that could yet add another layer to a career very much on an upward curve.
