Ghanaian defender Dillon Berko has been presented with a golden opportunity to force his way into Borussia Monchengladbach’s first-team plans after an untimely injury to fellow right-back Yukhym Konoplya reshaped the Bundesliga club’s defensive options, according to Bild.
The 20-year-old academy prospect had appeared destined for another spell on the fringes of the senior squad, but circumstances have shifted dramatically following Konoplya’s setback, giving Berko a realistic pathway to greater involvement ahead of the new campaign.
Konoplya has been ruled out after sustaining a partial medial ligament tear in his knee, with initial assessments indicating he could spend up to two months on the sidelines. His absence leaves Gladbach light at right-back, increasing competition for places behind the experienced Joe Scally.
Although Scally is expected to fill the void, his own situation remains far from straightforward following a delayed return during pre-season and lingering uncertainty surrounding his future after previous transfer speculation.
Berko has already shown encouraging signs that he is ready to compete at a higher level. The Ghanaian was introduced early during Borussia Monchengladbach’s recent pre-season friendly against Rot-Weiss Essen and impressed over more than an hour on the pitch with a composed and confident display.
His performance did not go unnoticed by head coach Eugen Polanski, who acknowledged that the unexpected vacancy could work in the youngster’s favour while stressing that consistent hard work will determine whether he secures a permanent place in the senior setup.
Polanski said the youngster’s misfortune may become his opportunity, but he also made it clear that nothing will be handed to him.
The coach’s comment that Berko is not especially loud in training shows what still needs to improve.
With Gladbach navigating an unexpected shortage in defence, Berko now finds himself closer than ever to making a sustained breakthrough, and the coming weeks could prove decisive in his bid to establish himself in the Bundesliga first team.
