Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko have strongly rejected circulating reports alleging that interim head coach Prince Yaw Owusu walked away from the team’s camp and failed to oversee training on Thursday, April 16.

In a firm response, the club clarified that the narrative is inaccurate and misleading. Through an official communication signed by Communications Director Samuel Sarfo Duku, Kotoko emphasized that Owusu’s temporary absence was fully authorized by management.

According to the club, the coach had formally requested leave to deal with pressing family issues as he continues to grieve the loss of his mother. He is, however, expected to rejoin the team in Kumasi shortly.

“The club wishes to firmly debunk rumours suggesting that Interim Head Coach Prince Yaw Owusu has left the team’s camp without notice. These claims are untrue. Prince duly sought permission from management to attend to urgent family matters as he continues to mourn the passing of his beloved mother. He is expected to return to Kumasi this morning, and any further updates or decisions will be officially communicated in due course.”

Earlier reports had painted a different picture, claiming Owusu skipped training due to fears for his safety amid alleged threats from sections of the fanbase. During his absence, assistant coach Mohammed Hamza Obeng reportedly took charge of the session.

The interim boss has faced mounting scrutiny in recent weeks following a difficult run of results. Since stepping into the role, Owusu has overseen eight matches, managing just two victories alongside two draws and four losses. Among those setbacks was a heavy 4-0 defeat to Medeama SC.

Kotoko’s inconsistent form has intensified frustration among supporters, many of whom are urging the club’s leadership to appoint a permanent head coach to stabilize performances and restore confidence within the squad.
