Arsenal youngster Charles Sagoe Jr has made his international intentions clear, the winger has politely turned down Liberia’s call-up as he dreams of one day donning the colours of Ghana’s Black Stars.

Footy-Africa understands that the 21-year-old, whose father hails from Ghana and mother from Liberia, was approached by the Liberia Football Association during the ongoing international break. However, Sagoe Jr declined the invitation, signalling where his allegiance truly lies.

A close associate of the player confirmed his decision, telling Footy-Africa:

“Charles has only eyes for Ghana. He appreciates Liberia’s interest but wants to represent his father’s country when the time comes.”

Liberia head coach Thomas Kojo had earlier revealed that formal contact was made with Arsenal to request the player’s release. He also admitted that Sagoe Jr’s family preferred to hold off before making any commitment regarding his international future.

Sagoe Jr, who made his senior debut for the Gunners in the 2023 League Cup, has been a standout performer for Arsenal’s U21 side this season. In just seven Premier League 2 appearances, he has registered three goals and three assists, earning him a nomination for the league’s Player of the Month award for August.

While both Ghana and England continue to keep tabs on his progress, sources close to the player indicate that his long-term ambition is crystal clear, to one day represent Ghana at senior level.

If his current form continues, the Black Stars could soon find themselves welcoming one of Arsenal’s most promising wide talents into their fold.
