Ghanaian forward Asumah Abubakar has opened a new chapter in his well-travelled career after completing a move to Austrian 2. Liga side SC Austria Lustenau.

The 28-year-old striker links up with the Green-Whites on a short-term contract running until the conclusion of the 2025/26 season, arriving as a free agent following his departure from Maltese Premier League outfit Birkirkara FC earlier this month.

Austria Lustenau confirmed the capture of the experienced attacker with an enthusiastic statement, announcing:

“The ink is dry, SC Austria Lustenau’s new attacking player has landed on the Rhine. The Green-Whites have made a move in the transfer market, strengthening their squad with Portuguese striker Asumah Abubakar.”

Speaking after sealing the move, Abubakar wasted little time in setting the tone for his spell at the Planet Pure Stadion.

“I’m happy to be here now. I’ve come to strengthen the team and will give everything to achieve our shared goals. I’m looking forward to the team, the club, and especially the fans,” he told the club’s official website.

Austria Lustenau sporting director Dieter Alge underlined the club’s belief in the signing, saying:

“We are very pleased to have signed an experienced striker like Abu for our club. He brings not only quality and a goal threat, but also valuable experience that will help our team both on and off the pitch.”

Abubakar brings with him a rich European résumé, having featured across several leagues with clubs including Grasshoppers Zurich, FC Luzern, FC Lugano, Willem II (U-19), Brisbane Roar and SC Kriens. His journey through Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands, Australia and Malta has shaped him into a seasoned frontman capable of leading the line at different levels.

Born in Kumasi, Abubakar previously represented Portugal at U-19 level, but remains eligible for the Ghana senior national team, keeping the door open for a potential Black Stars call-up as he looks to rediscover top form in Austria.

With Austria Lustenau pushing for a strong second half of the campaign, the arrival of Abubakar adds firepower, experience and fresh ambition to their attacking options.
