Ghana international Thomas Partey has begun his new chapter in Saudi Arabia on a positive note, expressing his satisfaction after making his Al Shabab debut in a 1-1 draw against Al Khaleej.

Partey was introduced in the 58th minute, just hours after completing his move to the Riyadh outfit, and quickly settled into the contest as Al Shabab searched for a winning goal.

The experienced midfielder showed glimpses of his quality during his 32-minute appearance, registering a 94 per cent passing accuracy while successfully completing all of his attempted long passes.

He also came within inches of marking his debut with a goal when his effort in the 80th minute narrowly missed the target.

Reflecting on his first outing in Al Shabab colours, Partey was pleased with both the reception and his team’s performance.

“Yeah, I think it’s amazing. I like it. It’s my first game here, and I thought we did great,” Partey said after the match.

Despite creating opportunities to claim all three points, Al Shabab had to settle for a share of the spoils, leaving Partey eager for an improved result in their next outing.

“We could have scored. We had the chance to score, but it’s part of football. We have to just keep working hard and try to make more points and get three points in our next game,” he added.

The 33-year-old joined Al Shabab on a one-year contract following his departure from Villarreal, where he featured 32 times last season.

His arrival adds considerable experience to Al Shabab’s midfield, with Partey having previously enjoyed prominent spells at Atletico Madrid and Arsenal during an accomplished European career.

Having now made his first appearance for his new employers, the Ghanaian is determined to repay the club’s faith in him.

“I think it’s normal. I will do my best to give everything to this club, and I’m really happy to be here,” Partey said.

Al Shabab have picked up only one point from their opening two Saudi Pro League fixtures and currently occupy 13th position. They will return to action on August 25 against Al Riyadh.

Partey’s move is also significant for Ghana, with the midfielder expected to remain an important figure for the Black Stars as they prepare to resume their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.

The former Arsenal midfielder started three of Ghana’s four matches at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and will now look to use his new adventure in Saudi Arabia to regain consistency and rediscover his best level.
