Ghana international Abdul Mumin is closing in on a fresh chapter in Spain, with the centre-back poised to join Girona after completing his medical in the city, according to Footy-Africa.

Mumin has reportedly already undergone the required medical examinations with the Catalan club and is expected to put pen to paper on his contract in the coming hours, provided there are no late complications.

The 28-year-old will arrive at Girona as a free agent after bringing his four-year association with Rayo Vallecano to an end.

His departure from Vallecas marks the conclusion of a spell that began in 2022, when he crossed over from Portuguese outfit Vitória Guimarães in a transfer reportedly worth around €1.5 million.

Mumin’s farewell to Rayo was an emotional one, with the Ghanaian taking time to acknowledge the supporters, staff and wider Vallecas community that had become part of his life.

“Today I have to say goodbye, and my heart is full of sadness.”

Reflecting on his four years at the club, he added:

“I don’t even know where to start. I have so many good memories from my time here in Vallecas. I’ve met wonderful people. I’ve forged friendships that I know will last a lifetime.”

The defender also spoke fondly of how quickly he felt embraced by the club and its supporters.

“From the very first day, I felt at home. I never felt out of place. I only wish I could have been more.”

Mumin leaves Rayo after a difficult final chapter, with a serious knee injury severely disrupting his momentum.

The Ghanaian suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in March 2025, an setback that kept him sidelined for close to a year and interrupted what had been a steady progression in Spanish football.

He eventually returned to competitive action last season but was restricted to just three appearances for Rayo, accumulating 78 minutes across the campaign and starting one match.

Despite the limited game time, his return to fitness was significant enough to bring him back into Ghana’s international picture, culminating in his inclusion in the Black Stars’ squad for the most recent FIFA World Cup, although he did not feature during the tournament.

His next destination is now Girona, where he will look to put the frustrations of the past year behind him and reignite a career that had been gathering momentum before injury struck.

Mumin’s physicality, defensive versatility and experience in Spanish football could provide Girona with an additional option at centre-back as the club reshapes its defensive department.

For the defender, meanwhile, the move represents more than a change of employers. It is an opportunity to reset, regain consistency and once again establish himself as a reliable presence at the highest level of Spanish football.

His affection for Rayo was evident in his parting message, particularly when he thanked those who worked behind the scenes.

“I also want to thank the people we don’t always see, but who make this club what it is. To the workers, the staff, the kit managers, the cooks, the cleaners: thank you for the affection, for getting up early, for the advice, and for treating…”

After four years in Vallecas, Mumin is now preparing to trade the red-and-white of Rayo for Girona’s colours, with an official announcement expected once the final formalities of his transfer are completed.
