Ex-Ghana skipper John Mensah has thrown his weight behind the Black Stars, expressing confidence that the team has what it takes to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions sit at the summit of Group I, holding a three-point cushion over second-placed Comoros, and could edge closer to sealing their spot in North America with back-to-back wins in September. Otto Addo’s men will first face Chad away on September 7 before returning to Accra to lock horns with Mali four days later.

Mensah, who marshalled Ghana’s defence at both the 2006 and 2010 World Cups, believes consistency will be key.

“If they play like the way they played the last two games, I believe they can qualify. They are playing well now, and they know each other very well. I believe if they keep on like that, they can qualify,” he told Citi Sports.

Beyond qualification, the former Sunderland centre-back also highlighted the importance of squad stability in ending Ghana’s long wait for silverware.

“This is a team they are maintaining for them to stay in the national team. And I believe if they keep them well and make little changes, I think they can be together and work to achieve a trophy for the nation,” he added.

Mensah, who earned 86 caps and netted three goals for Ghana, remains one of the country’s most respected defenders of the modern era.
