Finnish top-tier outfit Vaasan Palloseura have strengthened their ranks with the acquisition of highly-rated Ghanaian midfielder Maxwell Oduro, who arrives from Benab FC on a long-term deal.
The 19-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Veikkausliiga side after catching the attention of the club’s recruitment team through an extensive scouting operation. VPS ultimately activated an option to bring the teenager to Finland, marking a significant milestone in his young career.
Oduro’s transfer is also one of the first fruits of a newly established scouting collaboration that enabled the club to track and assess emerging talent in Ghana.
Despite the excitement surrounding the midfielder’s arrival, VPS Sporting Director Tommi Pikkarainen has emphasised the importance of a measured approach as Oduro settles into a new environment both on and off the pitch.
“It is too early to set different time goals for such a young player playing in Europe for the first time,” Pikkarainen said. “The first impression in training has been positive and promising.”
Club officials believe the Ghanaian possesses attributes that align well with the team’s tactical identity. However, they are determined to prioritise his development and adaptation before exposing him to the demands of top-flight football.
“Maxwell’s qualities seem to suit our style of play, but we will now give him time to adapt and get used to life in Vaasa,” Pikkarainen added.
To aid his transition, Oduro is expected to begin his journey with the VPS Academy side, where he could make his first competitive appearance as early as next weekend while continuing to adjust to Finnish football.

Back in Ghana, Benab FC celebrated the midfielder’s breakthrough move, describing the transfer as a proud moment for the club and another example of its commitment to nurturing talent capable of reaching the European stage.
“We are proud to announce the transfer of midfielder Maxwell Oduro to Finnish top-flight side VPS Palloseura. We thank Maxwell for his commitment and contributions to the club and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career,” the club stated.
The move represents a major opportunity for the young midfielder as he embarks on his first overseas challenge. Should his progression continue smoothly, Oduro could soon become the latest Ghanaian footballer to leave his mark on Finland’s premier division.
