Ghana’s preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have taken on a worrying tone, with head coach Otto Addo openly acknowledging a persistent void in the right-back position, one he fears may remain unresolved heading into the tournament.
The concern became more pronounced following Ghana’s recent international friendly in Vienna, where Addo opted for an unconventional solution by deploying FC Nordsjaelland midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi in a defensive role against Austria. The decision underscored the team’s ongoing struggle to secure a reliable specialist for the position.
Speaking to reporters on Sunday ahead of the Black Stars’ upcoming clash with Germany in Stuttgart, Addo struck a candid and somewhat pessimistic tone about the situation:
“We have two more months to look (for a new right back). I do not think we will find (a right back before the World Cup).”

Despite the bleak outlook, the 50-year-old tactician emphasized that the technical team is not abandoning the search entirely.
Instead, he insists the focus will remain on evaluating players already within reach, relying on both scouting data and internal assessments:
“I think on our database, and also myself in my head, I know all the Ghanaian players who are possible (right back options) who have the strength and quality. We will look at their form and their club, but also the little training we do here.”
Addo’s remarks are likely to stir debate among supporters, particularly in light of the recent introduction of Marvin Senaya, who earned his debut during the heavy defeat to Austria. While his inclusion hinted at a potential solution, it appears the coaching staff is yet to be fully convinced.
