Ghana’s rising football talent continues to make waves abroad, with teenage sensation Ransford Gyan taking a major step toward the professional game after being drafted by New York City FC in the 2026 MLS SuperDraft.

The highly rated 19-year-old was selected 27th overall, earning a move to the Eastern Conference powerhouse ahead of the 2026 Major League Soccer campaign following a standout collegiate season in the United States.

Gyan’s stock soared after a scintillating 2025 campaign with Clemson University, where his creativity, close control, and attacking intelligence made him one of the most exciting midfielders in college soccer. His performances did not go unnoticed, with multiple MLS clubs tracking him closely throughout the season.

Operating as an attacking midfielder, Gyan delivered a superb return for the Clemson Tigers, finding the net nine times and registering five assists. His impact and consistency were rewarded when he was crowned ACC Freshman of the Year, underlining his rapid rise in the collegiate game.

Before his exploits at Clemson, Gyan had already built a strong reputation at youth level. In 2024, he claimed the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Soccer Player of the Year award while developing at MLS NEXT outfit Cedar Stars Academy, a recognition reserved for the most outstanding young prospects in the country.

Despite his slight frame, the technically gifted playmaker is now poised to test himself at the highest level of American soccer, as he looks to break into New York City FC’s senior setup and begin his professional journey next year.

Clemson’s influence on the draft extended beyond Gyan, with two more Ghanaian talents also earning MLS moves. Kwaku Agyabeng was taken fourth overall by Sporting Kansas City, while Wahabu Musah secured a switch to the Colorado Rapids, capping an impressive draft night for Ghanaian football and the Clemson program alike.
