Former Ghana head coach Chris Hughton has showered praise on Otto Addo, describing the current Black Stars boss as a top-tier tactician and an exemplary leader.

Addo has faced his fair share of criticism in recent months, particularly after Ghana’s shock failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, the country’s first absence from the continental showpiece in over two decades.

Yet, amid the disappointment, the 50-year-old German-born coach redeemed his reputation by steering the national team to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to be staged across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The qualification milestone cemented Addo’s place in history as the first Ghanaian to guide the Black Stars to back-to-back World Cup tournaments.

Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Hughton was full of admiration for his successor’s impact and steady hand.

“Otto Addo is a very good coach. He has now taken the team to two World Cups, not something many coaches do,” said Hughton, who previously managed Newcastle United and Brighton.

“He is a good coach. As an individual, I like him a lot,” he added.

Hughton, who led Ghana during the 2023 AFCON and previously served as a technical advisor under Addo’s first stint, expressed confidence that his compatriot’s calm demeanor and tactical discipline would continue to serve the team well on the global stage.

Ghana will discover their group-stage opponents for the 2026 World Cup on December 5, as preparations intensify for another shot at global glory.
