Rising Ghanaian talent Gibson Nana Adu is heading back to familiar territory, with SpVgg Unterhaching confirming his return on loan from Bayern Munich for the remainder of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 17-year-old striker, who was once one of Unterhaching’s brightest prospects, will link up with the Regionalliga Bayern outfit in January after his proposed move to Austria’s SCR Altach fell through during the summer transfer window.

Adu had initially agreed to spend the season with the Austrian Bundesliga club, but UEFA regulations blocked the switch due to his age, as Altach’s classification as a Category 4 club restricted international transfers for underage players.

Now, his former club Unterhaching have moved quickly to bring him back into the fold, a decision that offers the teenage forward a chance to earn regular first-team football in a competitive environment he already knows well.

In a statement on their official website, Unterhaching confirmed:

“SpVgg Unterhaching are bolstering their attack with a familiar face. Striker Gibson Adu returns to the uhlsport PARK during the winter transfer window. The 17-year-old will be loaned from FC Bayern Munich starting January 1, 2026. Adu moved from the suburban club to the record German champions in the summer of 2024 and signed a contract there until June 30, 2027. He gained valuable experience at FC Bayern this season, but is now expected to receive consistent playing time at a high level in Unterhaching.”

Adu’s journey has been a rapid one. Having joined Unterhaching from FSV Mainz 05’s youth setup in 2022, he quickly rose through the U17 and U19 ranks before making history as the youngest player ever to feature for the senior team. He made his professional debut in the 3. Liga on February 17, 2024, against Arminia Bielefeld, aged just 16 years and three days, and later netted his first senior goal in a home win over VfB Lübeck.

Since moving to Bayern in 2024, Adu has continued to polish his attacking instincts within the club’s youth setup, earning praise for his pace, intelligence, and clinical finishing.

Born in Germany to Ghanaian parents, the youngster remains eligible to represent both Germany and Ghana internationally. With his potential trajectory pointing sharply upward, Ghana’s national team scouts will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on his development.

Unterhaching’s faith in Adu’s return reflects both nostalgia and foresight, bringing home a player they helped shape, now with the pedigree of Bayern Munich behind him.
