Youthful midfielder Kwasi Sibo has promised not to rest on his laurels after making a memorable bow for Ghana’s senior national team, The Black Stars.
The Real Oviedo midfielder, 25, slotted seamlessly into the Black Stars setup earlier this month, partnering Thomas Partey in the engine room as Ghana edged Mali 1-0 in a tense World Cup qualifying clash at the Accra Sports Stadium. It was Alexander Djiku’s strike that sealed all three points, but Sibo’s composure and work rate in midfield did not go unnoticed.
The opportunity opened up for him after Elisha Owusu missed the fixture through suspension, and Sibo grabbed it with both hands.
“Getting a starting role in such a crucial match means the coach has confidence in me, but I have to work even harder to fight for a place in the team,” he told Graphic Sports.
The midfielder knows club form will be crucial if he is to remain in contention for a national call-up.
“If I don’t get regular playing time at Oviedo, I’ll not catch the eye of the coach. So my focus is to keep working hard, for my club and for Ghana,” he added.
Ghana’s qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup remains firmly on track. The Black Stars top their group with 19 points after eight games and require strong finishes against the Central African Republic and Comoros in October to confirm a fifth appearance on football’s biggest stage.
