German-born Ghanaian attacker Ernest Poku has opened up about his international ambitions, revealing that representing Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup remains firmly on his radar, even as he continues to weigh his eligibility for two other European nations.

The 22-year-old winger, who has been catching the eye with his performances at club level, finds himself at a crossroads regarding his senior international future.

Eligible to play for Ghana, Germany, and the Netherlands, Poku admits that no official approach has yet materialized from any of the three football associations.

Despite the uncertainty, the forward remains focused on maintaining top form while patiently waiting for clarity on where his international journey will ultimately lead.

Ernest Poku weighs in on Ghana switch as Leverkusen form sparks debate

In an interview with Dutch outlet Sportsnieuws.nl, Poku expressed his ambitions and current stance:

“Of course, but the only thing I can do is my best. Those are options (Germany, Ghana and Netherlands) too, but I haven’t heard anything from any of the three yet. I can only wait.”

Although speculation has linked him with a potential switch to represent Ghana, the four-time African champions. Poku dismissed the credibility of informal outreach, stressing the importance of proper channels in such decisions.

Addressing reports of contact from Ghana, he said:

“I have heard a few things from Ghana, but those are just fifteen people messaging me and saying they work there. Ultimately, you don’t know what to believe anymore. I have indicated that they shouldn’t communicate with me. If that is the case, I will hear it from my agent.”

Currently part of the Netherlands U-21 setup, Poku is focused on immediate commitments, including an upcoming UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier against Norway. His involvement at youth level for the Dutch adds another layer of intrigue to his international future.
