The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has moved into the process of appointing a new head coach for the Black Stars, with negotiations currently underway to determine the successor to Carlos Queiroz.
GFA Executive Council member Gideon Fosu has confirmed that the football governing body is actively engaged in discussions over the appointment, although no decision has yet been reached on who will take charge of the senior national team.
The Black Stars have been without a substantive coach since Queiroz’s short-term contract came to an end following Ghana’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced Portuguese tactician was handed a four-month contract in April after the GFA parted company with Otto Addo in March. However, efforts to retain the 73-year-old have reportedly stalled, with the two parties unable to reach an agreement over his financial demands.
With Ghana’s next competitive assignment fast approaching, Fosu has assured supporters that the coaching situation will be resolved in time for the Black Stars’ return to action.
“I think what’s there for Ghanaians to know is that we’ll definitely play Senegal and we have to play the qualifiers, right? What I can say on authority is that we are definitely going to have a coach who is in charge of the team,” he said.
“We are still talking, we are still negotiating. I am sure that at the right time, the president of the FA will announce who the next coach of the Black Stars will be,” Fosu added.
Queiroz was reportedly earning $80,000 per month during his brief tenure with the national team, a figure that has added further context to the negotiations surrounding a possible continuation of his spell.
The GFA is now under pressure to make a swift appointment, with Ghana expected to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign in September.
The Black Stars have been placed in Group C alongside familiar West African opponents Ivory Coast, as well as The Gambia and Somalia.
Ghana will be determined to secure a place at the next AFCON after failing to qualify for the previous edition in Morocco, making the appointment of the new coach a crucial decision ahead of the qualification campaign.
