Aaron Essel has officially completed a move to American second-tier outfit Sacramento Republic FC in the United States.
The Ghanaian midfielder joins the USL Championship side from Scottish Premiership club St Johnstone after finalizing a permanent switch.
At just 20 years old, Essel is expected to strengthen Sacramento’s midfield options, although his registration will only be completed after league and federation clearance, in addition to securing a P-1 visa and International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
Sacramento Republic head coach Neill Collins believes the Ghanaian possesses the qualities needed to make an immediate impact.
“Aaron brings energy, athleticism, and a strong work ethic to our team,” said Republic FC Head Coach Neill Collins. “His experience in other leagues and at the international level has set him up well to help us compete for trophies this year.”
Essel is no stranger to football in the United States. During the 2025 campaign, he spent time on loan at North Texas SC, competing in the MLS NEXT Pro. Over the course of the season, the midfielder featured in 17 matches, scoring twice and providing one assist while finishing second in the squad’s passing statistics with an impressive 86 percent accuracy rate.

Speaking after sealing the transfer, the young midfielder expressed excitement about the next chapter of his career.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be joining Republic FC this season. Sacramento has a passionate soccer community and a club with big ambitions, that’s exactly the environment I’ve been looking for,” said the Ghanaian. “I can’t wait to get on the pitch and give everything for the badge and the fans.”
Before moving to Scotland, Essel established himself at Bechem United where he made 68 appearances for the Ghana Premier League side.
He has also earned international recognition with Ghana national football team, making his senior debut during the Unity Cup clash against Nigeria national football team in May 2025.
