Asante Kotoko’s flawless start to the Ghana Premier League campaign was snapped in dramatic fashion on Wednesday, as Basake Holy Stars clinched a 2-1 victory with a stoppage-time dagger at the AAKII Arena.

The Porcupine Warriors arrived as the last remaining unbeaten side in the league and were primed to draw level with leaders Aduana FC. But Holy Stars, fighting to climb out of danger, produced one of their most spirited showings of the season to halt Kotoko’s surge.

The opening half was finely poised, with both teams carving half-chances but lacking the finishing precision to break the deadlock. The tone shifted just four minutes into the second period when Richmond Somiah coolly slotted home, sending the home supporters into wild celebration.

Kotoko’s response was swift and emphatic. In the 53rd minute, Kwame Poku pounced to bring the visitors level, injecting renewed belief into their hunt for a comeback win.

From there, the pressure was almost entirely one-way as Kotoko pushed, probed and piled forward. Yet Holy Stars held their structure with impressive discipline, and waited for the moment to strike.

That moment arrived deep into added time. Prince Tweneboah rose to the occasion, firing home a dramatic winner in the 92nd minute to seal a famous victory for the hosts.

The result lifts Holy Stars to nine points, offering a crucial boost in their battle against relegation. For Kotoko, the defeat leaves them fourth on the table, three points off the summit, and ruing a missed opportunity to tighten the title race.
