Medeama SC board member, Dr Tony Aubynn, has underlined the urgency of Ghana’s quest to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, stressing that the Black Stars cannot afford to miss out on the global showpiece.

The four-time African champions currently sit in pole position in Group I of the qualifiers with 19 points after eight games. With only two fixtures remaining, Ghana’s fate lies in its own hands as they prepare to wrap up the campaign.

The Stars looked shaky after a frustrating draw against Chad in June but steadied themselves with a crucial 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday night. That result restored belief in Otto Addo’s charges as they edge closer to the finish line.

Dr Aubynn, who once served on the Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council, told Citi Sports that qualification goes beyond football, it’s about national pride and Ghana’s legacy on the global stage.

“Black Stars qualifying [to the World Cup] is extremely important; it adds to our reputation as a football nation. Ghana is a football might in Africa, and the records show… but I think qualifying is very important to us, and I think we must do everything to qualify,” he emphasized.

The 2026 World Cup, set to be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada, promises to be the largest in history, and Ghana will be determined to be part of it. To seal their ticket, the Stars must navigate their final hurdles against the Central African Republic and Comoros in next month’s decisive double-header.
