League Two outfit Newport County have bolstered their attacking ranks with the signing of Ghanaian forward Nathan Opoku, who arrives on loan from Premier League side Leicester City until the end of December 2025, pending EFL approval and international clearance.
At 24, Opoku brings a rich mix of promise and experience, having carved out a reputation as a prolific finisher during his college days in the United States before transitioning smoothly into the European game.
Opoku’s journey began at Lindsey Wilson College, where his lethal instincts in front of goal quickly drew attention — he netted an eye-catching 19 goals in as many appearances. A move to Syracuse University followed, where he was instrumental in the team’s historic NCAA Division I National Championship triumph, registering 11 goals and eight assists across 25 matches.
His meteoric rise caught the attention of Leicester City, who secured his signature in January 2023. The Foxes immediately sent him to Belgian side OH Leuven to accelerate his development in the competitive Jupiler Pro League, a spell that gave him vital senior minutes and sharpened his skill set.

Speaking to the club media, Newport boss David Hughes believes Opoku’s addition could prove a game-changer.
“Nathan’s a fantastic addition for us,” Hughes said. “He’s still young but already boasts a wealth of experience, from excelling in the U.S. collegiate system to proving himself in Europe. His pace, technical quality, and eye for goal will give us more dynamism in the final third.”
Opoku himself is relishing the opportunity to make an impact in South Wales.
“I can’t wait to get started,” he said. “This is a fresh challenge, and I’m eager to help the team push forward. I feel ready to give my best and contribute to the club’s ambitions.”
