Sunderland’s Premier League comeback is about to get a major boost, with the Black Cats closing in on the capture of Dutchman with Ghanaian descent Brian Brobbey in a deal that could be worth around £21.6 million, as per BBC.

The 23-year-old Dutch international has been one of the Eredivisie’s most explosive forwards, racking up 56 goals and 24 assists in 163 appearances for Ajax. Known for his powerful runs, sharp finishing, and relentless pressing, Brobbey has been a consistent performer for club and country, earning eight senior caps for the Netherlands.

His arrival would mark Sunderland’s most high-profile attacking signing of the summer and comes at a crucial time. The club lost Chelsea loanee Marc Guiu after the Blues recalled him to cover for an injured Liam Delap, leaving Sunderland short of a focal point up front. Manager Regis Le Bris and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman have moved quickly to plug the gap, identifying Brobbey as a long-term leader of their attack.

Brobbey’s arrival would be another statement in an ambitious transfer window that has seen the newly promoted club splash £141.5m already, just shy of Nottingham Forest’s British record for a promoted side. Sunderland have already signed midfielder Habib Diarra for a club-record £30m, added Simon Adingra for £20.5m, and lured Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen for £17.3m.

While Brobbey headlines their shopping spree, Sunderland are also on the verge of strengthening their back line. RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida is expected to complete a medical on Monday ahead of an initial loan deal with an option to buy.

With 13 signings close to completion and a squad packed with quality, Sunderland’s return to the top flight looks less like a survival mission and more like a declaration of intent.
