2023 U-20 Afcon: Another VAR role for Daniel Laryea, Roland Addy named Assistant Referee

Ghana’s Daniel Laryea has been entrusted with Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties for the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Egypt 2023 scheduled to begin this weekend.

The tournament will span three weeks – from Sunday, February 19 to Sunday, March 11, 2023.

This will be the second consecutive continental tournament in which Laryea will form part of the VAR team, having excelled in both the opening and final matches of the recently concluded 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) in Algeria.

Laryea has been elevated from the Assistant VAR role he played at the CHAN to a Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

In addition to Laryea, Fifa-badged assistant referee Roland Nii Dodoo Addy will be Ghana’s second representative at the U-20 Afcon.

Roland Addy has arrived in Egypt ahead of the tournament.

Daniel Laryea is scheduled to join later this weekend from Libya where he is leading a quartet of Ghanaian referees including Kwasi Acheampong Brobbey (Assistant I), Paul Kodzo Atimaka (Assistant II) and Charles Benle Bulu (Fourth Official) to officiate the 2022/23 Caf Champions League group stage game between Al-Merreikh of Sudan and Egyptian giants Zamalek on Friday, February 17. Merreikh are hosting the game at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium.

Meanwhile current U-20 Afcon champions Ghana will not be available to defend the title after failing to qualify for the tournament from Wafu Zone-B. The semifinalists will automatically qualify as Africa’s representatives at the 2023 Fifa U-20 World Cup scheduled for Indonesia.
