VIDEO: Why Essien is not a superstar

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien says he does not see himself as a superstar but rather a “normal guy.”

The 34-year-old is enjoying the latter parts of his football career in Indonesia with topflight side Persib Bandung.

Speaking to the club’s TV channel, the one-time Black Stars kingpin said all has been well so far since arriving at Persib.

“So far so good, I like living in Bandung.

“The people have been good to me. We just played the half season and everything has been good so far.

“Sometimes, we travel and go to places and I feel like we are in Africa. I’m enjoying the experience,” he says.

Touching on how he handles the pressure from fans due to his status, Essien remarked:

“I’m just a normal player,

“To me, I’m not a superstar. I’m just a normal guy who loves to enjoy his football. Maybe to the outside world, I look like one but I don’t see myself like that.

“I’m the type of person who will not put any pressure on myself. I’m too kind of relaxed and do not worry my head…”

Michael Essien has scored three goals in 18 appearances since arriving at Persib in March.
