Edmund Addo signs with Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade

After years of being pursued, Ghana international Edmund Addo has finally signed for Serbian giants Red Star Belgrade.

The center midfielder came extremely close to joining the record champions last summer, but negotiations with his previous club FC Sheriff Tiraspol fell down at the very last minute.

Addo had the chance to move to Serbia again during the January transfer window, but he decided to sign a two-and-a-half-year contract with FK Spartak Subotica instead, where he made a total of 16 appearances.

Now after a half-season spell, the 23-year-old has switched sides by signing a four-year deal with Red Star, the club announced on Wednesday.

Addo, who has taken up jersey number 21, is happy that he is, at last, wearing the red and white.

“They are great impressions, a really nice atmosphere greeted me at Maracana and I am happy to be here,” Addo opened at his unveiling presser.

“I am excited to have the opportunity to play in front of Red Star fans, I remember them well. It’s been a long time of interest, and I’m aware of the expectations, so I’ll do my best to make the fans proud.

“I adapted to life in Serbia, although it wasn’t easy when I came, changes and everything, but these six months helped me to get used to football and the conditions.

“I am also slowly learning the language, the words I know may not be suitable for the conference, but I will improve my vocabulary, it will be better the next time we talk,” Addo laughed at the audience.

He had the opportunity to play at the Maracana during his days with FC Sheriff, and his main impression is the fans.

“I remember the atmosphere and the fans, it was unreal. I will try to be even better in Red Star than in Sherif and to help the team achieve its goals. I don’t think about the competition, because I don’t look at my teammates that way. We are all here for mutual success. When I get a chance on the field, I will do my best to use it,” said Addo.

Edmund Addo was born on 17.5.2000. in Accra, the capital of Ghana. Already at the age of 18, he left his home country and joined Slovakian Senica, for which he scored three goals in 53 matches. He gained prominence at FC Sheriff Tiraspol, where he was considered the best footballer of the Moldovan team in the group stage of the Champions League, and managed to score a goal in 33 matches, and he comes to our club from Spartak Subotica. He features for the Ghana senior national team alongside compatriot Osman Bukari who is also on the books of Red Star Belgrade.
