Afcon 2023Q: Knee injury keeps Gideon Mensah off Ghana trip to Madagascar

Gideon Mensah has been ruled out of Ghana’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifier with Madagascar in Antananarivo.

The left-back reported to the Black Stars camp on Monday but has been excused from this weekend’s game. This is after the team’s medical department assessed him for a knee problem he had during the season at his club, AJ Auxerre.

“Gideon picked up a knee injury during the season but his club managed him conservatively until the end of the season.

“Upon assessment in camp on Monday, we decided to excuse him from this game in order not to aggravate the injury,” Team medical head, Dr. Prince Pambo told ghanafa.org.

“We expect him to have enough rest during the break to recover on time for next season,” Dr. Pambo added.

Coach Chris Hughton will now have 24 players as preparations continue at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday, June 13. Deputy captain Thomas Partey was the last player to join camp.

Madagascar will host Ghana at Stade Kianja Barea on Sunday, June 18, 2023.
