2023 U-23 Afcon: Meteors’ late concentration slips against Congo enrage Tanko

Ghana coach Ibrahim Tanko was upset by his side’s gaps of focus in the last minutes of their close victory over Congo at the ongoing 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) on Sunday.

The Black Meteors started their campaign at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games qualifying tournament with a 3-2 win at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

Ghana had a 3-0 lead after 90 minutes, but Congo rallied to score twice in added time, prompting the Meteors boss to express his dismay.

“I am so angry with my players. How could we fail to manage the game well and finish like this. I think my players had forgotten that they were playing a major tournament to let in two goals towards the end of the match,” said a frustrated Tanko.

Going forward, the former Borussia Dortmund added: “We will remind them of the objectives that need to be achieved and the importance of our presence here.”

Tanko, on the other hand, was delighted with the attacking phases of his team, saying “I liked the creativity our wingers showed.”

Chris Hughton, the head coach of Ghana’s senior team, the Black Stars, was in the stands keeping an eye on the progression of the younger players.

If Ghana defeat hosts Morocco in their second Group A game on Tuesday, June 27, they would automatically book a ticket to the semifinals of the tournament.
