Bofoakwa Tano secure GPL promotion after 16 years

Bofoakwa Tano have earned promotion to the Ghana Premier League (GPL) after 16 years of waiting.

The ‘Hunters’ were relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2006/07 season. Now they are ready to rub shoulders with the big boys after capturing the title of Zone One Champions in the 2022/23 Access Bank Division One League (DOL).

Bofoakwa defeated Techiman Eleven Wonders 7-6 on penalties in the playoffs at the Accra Sports Stadium on Tuesday.

In a tightly contested game that ended 1-1 after extra time, they appeared to be the better team of the two.

Bofoakwa took the lead through a penalty converted in the 7th minute by Leslie Aryeetey. Wonders restored parity in the opening minute of the second half thanks to a header by Osman Zackaria,

The two sides expertly converted their first five kicks in the penalty shootout, but Bofoakwa missed their next.

Osman Zackaria was presented with the chance to seal an immediate return to the Premier League for Techiman Eleven Wonders. However, his effort – after walking from almost the centre line – was saved by goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi.

Kobi proved the hero by saving an Osei Asibey kick for Bofoakwa to emerge 7-6 winners.

This means Ghana Premier League football returns to Sunyani Coronation Park for 2023/24 season.

With Bofoakwa Tano’s return, they will become the fifth Bono team in the GPL next season. The others include Nsoatreman FC, Berekum Chelsea, Bechem United, and Aduana FC.

The 2023/24 betPawa Ghana Premier League (GPL) will also have Heart of Lions and Nations FC as the two other newly-promoted teams from Zone Two and Three respectively.
