2023 Wafu-B U-20 Girls’ Cup: Hosts Ghana beat Benin 3-0 in opener

Ghana secured a 3-0 victory against Benin in the opening day of the inaugural West Africa Football Union (Wafu) Zone-B U-20 Girls’ Championship at Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Saturday.

Mafia Nyame scored the opening goal of the tournament for the Black Princesses and two second half goals from skipper Stella Nyamekye and substitute Mary Amponsah summed up the mauling of the Amazons.

After a tricky opening minutes which saw goalkeeper Ahuofe Godoui pulling off an outstanding performance to prevent Ghana from getting the match opener, the Amazons’ defensive wall was finally breached in the 35th minute after Mafia Nyame powered in a strong effort inside the penalty area.

Forward Mary Amponsah got the game’s second with her first touch after replacing Faiza Seidu on the 66th-minute mark. In the following minute, the Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC forward lobbed a fine effort to ensure Princesses secured the breathing space.

Ghana continued the dominance and got another goal to extend the lead to 3-0 with a well-curled free-kick from captain Stella Nyamekye.

The Black Princesses engineered an impressive performance that put them top of the three-nation group that has Benin and Cote d’Ivoire.

Stella Nyamekye received the player of the match award.

Ghana will take to the field next against the Ivorians in their final group game on Tuesday.
