Pitch Maintenance: Baba Yara Stadium closed down ahead Stars and Meteors games

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium has been closed for pitch maintenance ahead of two crucial international games later this month.

The Kumasi facility – which recently got homologated by the Confederation of African Football (Caf) – has been earmarked to host games involving the Ghana senior national team and the. Under-23s.

The Black Stars will welcome Angola on Thursday, March 23 for their third Group E fixture in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers.

The Black Meteors are also scheduled to host Algeria in the second leg of their 2023 Under-23 Afcon final qualifying round tie on Tuesday, March 28.

“The Baba Yara Sports Stadium pitch will not be available for domestic competitions until after Ghana’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Angola.

“The Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Sports Authority reached the decision during a meeting on Wednesday.

“The decision is to give managers of the pitch ample time to further improve the quality of the pitch…” a GFA statement read.

Due to this, the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League match-day 21 fixture between Asante Kotoko and King Faisal – which was to come off at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on March 12 – has been postponed indefinitely. The GFA is expected to decide on an alternate date for the Kumasi derby.
