‘Injured’ Partey flies back to Arsenal for assessment

Thomas Partey has returned to London Colney to join Arsenal after the international window for Ghana.

After not playing against Angola in Luanda due to a knock, Partey has flown tobe assessed ahead of the weekend’s Premier League action.

As an integral part of Arsenal this season, the Gunners hope to keep him fit for their title charge and not add to the 33 matches the midfielder has missed since joining the club in 2020.

Chris Hughton provided clarity on why Thomas Partey was left on the bench in Ghana’s 1-1 draw to Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“Thomas has a small injury issue & we felt it was too big of a risk to start him,” Hughton told the media after the game.

Just like Mohammed Salisu, the experienced coach explained the technical and medical team didn’t want to take chances with a suspected sprain Partey had.

Partey, who is the deputy captain of the Black Stars was an unused substitute in Monday’s game but lasted full duration in Kumasi as Ghana defeated Angola 1-0.

Arsenal sent their lead performance physio, Simon Murphy along with Partey this international window to help with the player’s fitness. It is currently unclear if the 29-year-old will be available for Saturday’s Premier League fixture against Leeds United.

Ghana top Group E with eight points after four games, a point better than Central African Republic with Angola and Madagascar having five points and a point respectively.
