Ghana 1-0 Angola: Hughton sends out appreciation note to fans

Coach Chris Hughton says he is grateful to the people of Kumasi for the amazing support they offered the Black Stars.

A clarion call for 40,000 fans to fill the Baba Yara Sports Stadium was heeded by the residents of the Garden City as they filled the stadium to the rafters and provided an intimidating atmosphere for Thursday’s visitors.

The Black Stars left it late to get the Chris Hughton era off to a winning start as a late goalmouth scramble provided Bournemouth striker, Antoine Semenyo to riffle home the solitary strike of the day.

The result means the Black Stars pull three points clear at the top of the table in Group E and victory in Luanda on Monday could all but seal a place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) to be hosted by Cote d’Ivoire next year.

Hughton said to the press after the victory:

“First of all, I would like to thank the people of Kumasi for creating an incredible atmosphere today.

“I have no doubt that the fact that we scored a goal as late as we did today was because of the sort of atmosphere they created all throughout the game. So I want to say a big thank you from myself and on behalf of the rest of the team to the people of Kumasi.”

Ghana next play guests to the Angolans in Luanda on Monday, March 27.
