Medeama win 2-0 to record season double over Legon Cities [+VIDEO]

Medeama SC achieved a Ghana Premier League (GPL) double over Legon Cities after recording a 2-0 win in the opening fixture of the second round of the 2022/23 season on Friday.

The Yellow and Mauves began the campaign by shocking the Royals with a 1-0 victory away at El-Wak Stadium in September.

And coach Umar Abdul Rabi has succeeded in completing back-to-back wins against Maxwell Konadu’s side thanks to goals in each half of the match-day 18 contest at home – the Akoon Community Park (ACP) in Tarkwa.

The 40th minute was the turning point in Medeama’s dominance during the first half. Defender Nurudeen Abdulai broke the deadlock with a low drill past goalkeeper Sylvester Sackey at the first post.

Legon Cities responded positively at the start of the second half. They soon got their first shot on target. However, captain Jonah Attuquaye’s strike was saved by goalkeeper Felix Kyei.

No back-to-back corner kicks were successful for the Royals three minutes before the hour mark.

At the other end, Medeama thought they had a legitimate penalty in the 64th minute when Cities defender Nicholas Mensah appeared to have brought down Jonathan Sowah. However, centre referee Mohammed Misbaou ignored the shouts.

The second goal arrived in the 70th minute for Medeama. In a counterattack, the hosts stretched the Cities backline with Sowah laying a pass across the face of the goal to captain Kwasi Donsu who also cut back for Joshua Agyemang to finish off.

There were a number of decent chances for Legon Cities, but they were unable to convert them to at least prevent their 7th defeat in 18 matches. With 21 points, they now risk sinking into the relegation zone by the end of this round of games on Sunday.

The victors, Medeama SC, have now won three and drawn one of their last four matches, placing them in 6th place with 27 points.

Medeama’s Nurudeen Abdulai won the man-of-the-match award.
