Late Bature header as King Faisal squeeze past RTU

King Faisal edged Real Tamale United (RTU) 1-0 in their 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 17 encounter on Sunday.

The two sides entered their final game of the first round with contrasting fortunes from their last games. Faisal had lost three games in a row, while the visitors travelled to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium buoyed by victory over Hearts of Oak.

It was even at the end of the first half.

Faisal had the opportunity to go up early in the second when midfielder Joseph Gordon was brought down for a penalty. But David Oppong Afrane stepped up and completely missed the target from the spot in the 53rd minute.

The hosts continued to push for the opener and came close in the 80th minute. Baba Yahaya managed to beat goalkeeper Yaw Osei but was denied by a timely goalline clearance.

The match-winner arrived in the 88th minute through the head of first-half substitute (42′) Benjamin Bature from close range.

Despite their 1-0 win, King Faisal complete the first half of the campaign in the relegation zone – 16th with 20 points. RTU are in 8th position with 24 points.

King Faisal forward Samuel Boakye received the man-of-the-match award.
