Afcon 2023Q: Baba Yara Stadium passed fit by Caf, to host Ghana vs Angola

The Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi has received the validation of the Confederation of African Football (Caf) to host upcoming matches in the qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

A couple of weeks ago, a Caf communique listed only the Cape Coast Stadium for games in the year 2023.

The quite surprising decision prompted the Ministry of Youth and Sports to ask the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to appeal to Caf to review the status of the Kumasi facility as it intends to have the Black Stars play their remaining qualifiers there.

Ghana last hosted a game at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on March 29, 2022 when they faced Nigeria in the 2023 Fifa World Cup playoffs.

New coach Chris Hughton gets his reign underway when Ghana and Angola play a doubleheader in March 2023. On the 23rd, the Black Stars will host the Palancas Negras in Kumasi prior to traveling to Luanda to take on the same opponent four days later.

In the quest for a qualification spot in the Cote d’Ivoire 2023 Afcon tournament, both Ghana and Angola are tied on 4 points. The Black Stars, however, top Group E with superior goals after two games.
