CHAN 2022: South Africa’s Abongile Tom to take charge of opening match

Abongile Tom has been chosen as the referee for the opening match of the 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) between hosts Algeria and Libya.

The 7th edition of the tournament for domestic players gets underway on Friday, January 13, 2023.

And the 31-year-old South African has been handed the game scheduled for a brand-new stadium named after his country’s hero Nelson Mandela.

Abongile will be guided on the lines by MM Ivanildo MEIRELLES de Olivera (Assistant 1, Angola) and Kwasi Acheampong BROBBEY (Assistant 2, Ghana).

Samuel UWIKUNDA (Rwanda) is the fourth referee.

The VAR official is Mahmoud ASHOR from Egypt.

Mauritania’s Massa Diarra will work as Match Commissioner while Kelo BOSILONG (South Africa) plays the General Coordinator role.

Kickoff for the CHAN 2022 opener at Nelson Mandela Stadium in Baraki, Algiers is 19:00 GMT.
