Accra Lions go second with 2-1 win over Berekum Chelsea

Accra Lions notched up a 2-1 win at the Accra Sports Stadium against 10-man Berekum Chelsea to go second after match-day 13 of the 2022/23 betPawa Ghana Premier League (GPL) on Monday.

Seidu Bassit put Lions into the lead in the 20th minute, picking up a sweet pass from Hagan Frimpong

The Bibires struck back two minutes before the halftime break. The league’s top scorer Mezack Afriyie extended his tally to 8 goals by meeting a Laud Amoah cross.

Then in the 77th minute, midfielder Abass Samari – after coming close a couple of times earlier – finally got it right by smashing home the winner after a poor clearance from the visitors.

With about six minutes to the 90, Berekum Chelsea’s Afriyie fell unconscious after colliding with Jacob Mensah in the air.

The striker had to be rushed out of the Accra Sports Stadium to the nearest hospital for treatment.

A heavy tackle by Morison Anokye on substitute Daniel Awuni in the final minutes resulted in Berekum Chelsea being reduced to ten men.

Abass Samari won the man-of-the-match award.

Moving into second position, Accra Lions have 22 points, two behind leaders Aduana FC. Berekum Chelsea, on the other hand, drop to 14th on 16 points after 13 games.
