CHAN 2022: One Group A opener pushed back, Algeria vs Libya clash on Jan. 13

Hosts Algeria will enjoy the most attention on the opening day of the 2022 Championship of African Nations (CHAN) tournament on January 13, 2023.

This follows an announcement of a slight change in the fixture schedule by the Local Organising Committee (LOC) of the biennial continental showpiece on Sunday, December 25.

Two games were slated to follow the opening ceremony at Baraki Nelson Mandela Stadium – host nation Algeria kicking off with Libya at 17:00 GMT and an Ethiopia-Mozambique clash at 20:00 GMT.

With the approval of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), only the Algeria-Libya game will be played on Day One starting at 20:00 GMT on Friday while the second Group A fixture between Ethiopia and Mozambique has been pushed back to 14:00 GMT on Saturday, January 14.

A statement from the Algeria FA reads:

“On the proposal of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) of TotalEnergies CHAN ALGERIA 2022, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has agreed to introduce a slight modification to the schedule of matches for the tournament.

“Thus, the opening match of the competition between Algeria and Libya will be the only meeting of the day of January 13, 2023.

“Initially scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Algerian time, it will be played at 8:00 p.m. at the new Baraki stadium. “The second match of Pool A between Ethiopia and Mozambique, initially scheduled for January 13, 2023 at 8:00 p.m. Algerian time, will take place the next day, January 14, 2023, at 2:00 p.m.”
