Teen sensation Nicholas Mensah scored the winner for champions Asante Kotoko to beat Medeama SC 1-0 in their 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) match-day 6 clash at Akoon Park on Saturday.
It is a rare feat of consistency for the Porcupine Warriors, defeating the Mauve and Yellows at Tarkwa in back-to-back seasons. They won at the venue on their way to the title last season.
Kotoko were made to produce something special for the all-important goal and it came through the sheer brilliance of winger Nicholas Mensah in the 59th minute – a third for the signing from Division Two side FC Delsanco.
The 19-year-old picked up a pass from right-back Augustine Agyapong. skillfully went past Medeama left-back Nafiu Sulemana twice including a nutmeg before shooting from a tight angle into first post to beat Ivorian goalkeeper Boris Mandjui.
Kotoko were reduced to 10 men in the 87th minute after their Ivorian playmaker Eric Serge Zeze – who had come off the bench in the second half – attracted his second yellow card for a rather needless offence.
That did not deter the defending champions from securing a fourth win in six games to go 13 points and top of the standings ahead of the rest of match-day 6 fixtures scheduled for Sunday.
Medeama remain on 6 points after falling to their fourth defeat on the bounce.
Asante Kotoko centre-back Sherif Mohammed was adjudged man-of-the-match.
