King Faisal beat Accra Lions for three wins in a row

King Faisal defeated Accra Lions 2-1 in Kumasi to secure their third consecutive win and condemned the visitors to their second loss in a row on match-day 8 of the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) Sunday afternoon.

Having snapped an embarrassing 5-game losing start to the season with two straight wins, the Insha Allah boys were confident of a third despite having the top-of-the-table chasing Lions to battle with at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.

Faisal opened the scoring in the 37th minute with a Samuel Adom Antwi diving header which beat goalkeeper Wahab Abubakar.

Two minutes later, Lions thought they were deserving of a penalty after Daniel Awuni appeared to be pulled inside the hosts’ box, but referee Emmanuel Quansah was not convinced.

King Faisal doubled their lead in the 47th minute when Adom Antwi assisted striker Abednego Tetteh to score his second goal of the campaign – also in consecutive home games.

Striker Frederick Asante lost his starting spot on this Lions trip, but he came off the bench to reduce the deficit with a simple tap-in in the 69th minute.

Accra Lions did their bit to pull level but their efforts were not enough to prevent a second straight defeat.

Following their third win on the bounce, King Faisal sit just above the drop zone – 15th – with 9 points.

Accra Lions benefit from a weekend where all the top 4 sides lost to maintain the second position with their accumulated 15 points after 8 games.

King Faisal’s Samuel Adom Antwi received the man-of-the-match award.

The 2022/23 Ghana Premier League (GPL) takes a break for the Qatar World Cup and will resume after the tournament in December.
