2022 World Cup: Italian Daniele Orsato to referee opening match

Referee Daniele Orsato of Italy will be in charge of the opening match of the 2022 Fifa World Cup between hosts Qatar and Ecuador on Sunday, November 20.

At 16.00 GMT, the match will follow the opening ceremony at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Orsato – who turns 47 on November 23 – will be making his World Cup debut and is the only Italian centre referee at this edition.

The 2019/20 Uefa Champions League final referee will be joined by compatriots Ciro Carbone and Alessandro Giallatini as assistants, with Massimiliano Irrati on VAR.

Romanian Itsvan Kovacs will act as the fourth referee.

Senegal and the Netherlands complete the teams in Group A. They will meet on Monday, November 21.
