2022 World Cup: “Football’s not about taking revenge” – Ghana’s Andre Ayew

Captain Andre Ayew insists revenge is not on the menu when Ghana face Uruguay in their final game in Group H of the 2022 Fifa World Cup in Qatar.

The 32-year-old was part of the Black Stars team whose fairytale at the 2010 finals in South Africa was controversially curtailed at the quarterfinal stage by the Uruguayans.

Come December 2, the two countries will clash for the first time since that epic match of 12 years ago.

“Football’s not about taking revenge,” Ayew said to Fifa+.

“We simply want to win and make our country proud. It will be our last group game, so I just hope whatever result we get is enough to make it through to the next round.

“We have to focus on the here and now – what happened before is irrelevant today. We have to do our best to make the continent proud, because playing in the World Cup is actually for the whole of Africa, not just Ghana alone. And that’s really all we intend to focus on.

Before the Uruguay meeting, Ghana will play Portugal and South Korea in their first two matches in Group H on November 24 and 28 respectively.
