Kyereh registers first Freiburg goal

Ghana international Daniel-Kofi Kyereh scored his first competitive goal for new club SC Freiburg in a 2-1 win over Mainz O5 in the 2022/23 German Bundesliga on Saturday.

The summer signing’s goal comes after an impressive outing with the Black Stars during the September break.

Freiburg, looking to snap a winless run after recording back-to-back goalless draws before the international break, sprinted to a 2-0 half-time lead at Stade Europa-Park.

It took them just three minutes to find a breakthrough – Ritsu Doan dummied a Maximilian Eggestein ball into the box, giving Michael Gregoritsch the space to smash in the opening goal.

Kyereh made it 2-0 on 37 minutes after forward Gregoritsch flicked a beautifully disguised Vincenzo Grifo cross onto the bar, and the rebound fell kindly for the 26-year-old midfielder to tap in from close range.

Visiting Mainz dominated the second half but could only halve the deficit through Aarón Martin Caricol in the 52nd minute.

The 2-1 victory means SC Freiburg maintain their second position in the league standings with 17 points after match-day 8.
