2023 U-23 AfconQ: Baba Yara Stadium to host Ghana vs Mozambique

Come October 30, the Baba Yara Sports Stadium will be hosting its first international match since the 2022 Fifa World Cup playoffs against Nigeria earlier this year.

This follows the decision of authorities to pick the venue for the Black Meteors to play their home games in the qualifiers for the Morocco 2023 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Ghana quite recently had the Kumasi facility passed fit to host international and continental competitions with Asante Kotoko playing their Caf Champions League home game against RC Kadiogo at the venue in September.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko’s Black Meteors begin the quest for back-to-back qualification to the U-23 Afcon against Mozambique from the second round.

The Mozambiquans – who eliminated Mauritius with a 5-1 aggregate scoreline in the first round – will be hosting the first leg at Estádio do Zimpeto in Zimpeto – Maputo on Sunday, October 23.

The return leg at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium is on Sunday, October 30 with kickoff at 15:00 GMT.

Meteors began preparations on September 7 in Prampram after coach Tanko invited 32 players to camp.

Should Ghana go past Mozambique, they will come up against DR Congo or Algeria in the third and final qualifying round of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games’ qualifying tournament in March 2023.

Road to Morocco 2023 U-23 Afcon:

  • Second Round

Mozambique vs Ghana

First Leg: October 21-23 | Second Leg: October 30

  • Third/Final Round

Mozambique/Ghana vs DR Congo/Algeria

Dates: March 20-28, 2023.

Successful negotiation of the round will mean back-to-back qualifications for the Meteors after the last U-23 Afcon outing in Egypt in 2019.

Seven (7) nations will secure tickets to join hosts Morocco for the 4th edition of the U-23 Afcon in June 2023.
